71. Jagannath Maha Prasadam Prayers

Jagannath Maha Prasadam Prayers:

Before honoring Jagannath maha-prasadam, you can recite the following prayer from the Puranas, which is recited by many devotees in Puri.

nilacala nivasanya,

nityaya paramatmane

balabhadra subhadrayam,

jagannathaya te namah

"I offer my respectful obeisances to the Supreme Lord Jagannath, who eternally resides in Nilacala along with Balabhadra and Subhadra." Followers of Srila Bhaktivinoda Thakura often sing this bhajana from Gitavali before honoring Jagannath maha-prasadam:

1) bhai-re!

eka-dina nilacale, prasad-sevana-kĆ„le,

mahaprabhu sri-krsṇa-caitanya

bolilen bhakta-gane,

khecarĆ”nna suddha-mane,

seva kori hao aj dhanya

O brothers! One day in Nilacala dhama (Jagannath Puri), at the time of honoring Jagannath prasada, Mahaprabhu Sri Krsna Caitanya told all the devotees, "Today, may you all become blessed by honoring the khicuri of Lord Jagannath in a pure state of mind."

2) khecaranna pitha-pana,

apurva prasada nana,

jagannatha dilo toma sabe

akantha bhojana kori',

bolo mukhe 'hari hari',

avidya-durita nahi robe

Gauranga Mahaprabhu continued, "Lord Jagannath has given you varieties of extraordinary and wonderful prasada, such as khicuri and pitha- pănă (a type of cake and condensed-milk preparation). Therefore, take all of this prasada until you are filled up to the neck, and with your mouths chant 'Hari! Hari!' In such a transcendental atmosphere; ignorance and sin cannot remain.

3) jagannatha-prasadanna,

virinci-sambhura manya,

khaile prema hoibe udoy

emona durlabha dhana,

paiyacho sarva-jana,

jaya jaya jagannatha jay

Mahaprabhu concluded, "These foodgrain remnants of Lord Jagannath are worshipable even by Lord Brahma and Lord Shiva. Upon the eating of it, Krsna-prema arises within the heart. All of you have obtained such a rare treasure. All glories! All glories! All glories to Lord Jagannath!"
