52. Drama & Singing For Lord Jagannath

Drama & Singing For Lord Jagannath:

Srila Ramananda Raya composed a drama named Jagannatha-Vallabha-Nataka and he engaged two young girls, who were professional dancers and singers, to demonstrate the ideology of the drama. Such girls called (deva-dasis) are still employed in the temple of Jagannath, where they are called (Maharis).

These songs and dramas are all performed for the pleasure of Lord Jagannath. Frequently, Jayadeva Gosvami's famous poem, Gita-Govinda, is sung before the deity.
