36. Only Hindus are allowed in Jagannath Puri temple
Only Hindus are allowed in Jagannath Puri temple:
By the mercy of His Divine Grace A. C. Bhaktivedanta Swami Prabhupada, millions of people all over the world are now acquainted with the culture of Lord Jagannath. By the efforts of Srila Prabhupada and his followers, there are now Jagannath temples in virtually every country of the world, and Ratha-yatra is a feature in nearly every major city. Today there are thousands of devotees born outside of India who have been devotedly serving Lord Jagannath for years-worshiping Him as His pÅ«jÄrÄ«s, organizing Ratha yÄtra festivals, and in general spreading His glories. They are naturally very excited to visit Puri to see the original temple and deity of Jagannath. Yet when they happily arrive in Puri and go to the temple for darsana of their beloved Lord, they are stopped by the sign at the entrance to the temple: "Only Hindus Are Allowed".
Injustice:
Seeing this, some devotees become discouraged and hurt, "This is a great injustice! Don't the priests of Lord Jagannath understand the basic principle of Bhagavad-gitÄ that we are not these bodies? The initiated vaishnavas from other countries strictly follow the principles of no eating of meat, fish, or eggs, no gambling, no illicit sex, and no intoxication, including coffee, tea and pan. They are daily worshiping Krishna, chanting the names of Krishna, reading Bhagavad-gitƤ, and preaching the glories of Krishna, Jagannath, all over the world. Yet they are not allowed inside the temple of Lord Jagannath? At the same time, any meat-eating non-Hindu can easily gain entrance if he speaks an Indian language and has the right color skin? How is He the Lord of the universe? Perhaps He should be renamed as Hindunath or Purinath, the Lord of the Hindus, or the Lord of Puri...!!! And how can He be called patita-pavana, the most merciful?"
